Frequently Asked Questions

I am a delivery driver, I have a question

Do you need a license to ride a bike in Belgium?

No.

But that doesn't mean cyclists don't have obligations, even though there isn't a specific 'highway code"

Road safety rules must be followed to ensure their safety and that of others

Furthermore, the cyclist ensures that their bike and equipment are always in compliance

How can I ensure that my bike meets the technical standards?

If you are using public roads, to ensure your safety and that of others, you must ensure that your bike has

- Good brakes at the front and rear (on children's bikes, one brake is sufficient)
- A bell to signal your presence
- A white or yellow light at the front and a red light at the rear for better visibility
- A white reflector at the front and a red reflector at the rear Reflectors on the pedals
- Reflectors in the wheels or reflective sidewalls on the tires

In addition, to ensure their safety, cyclists must wear a self-reflective vest

Is wearing a helmet mandatory?

No. But even though wearing a helmet is not mandatory when cycling, it is strongly recommended. As a reminder, a helmet represents the safest way to protect your head in case of a fall or collision.

  • The helmet must be fastened
  • The helmet must not obstruct your visibility
  • Make sure the helmet does not slide backward once attached.

Is the cyclist required to use the bike lane?

The bike lane is indicated by a sign or by dashed lines on the ground forming a lane.

When it is provided, cyclists are generally required to use it.

Road markings such as bike logos or chevrons have no binding value: they suggest the position of the cyclist and remind motor vehicles that they are not alone on the road.

Where should I ride if there are no bike lanes?

When there are no bike lanes, cyclists ride on the road. However, they can also ride on parking areas and sidewalks at ground level to their right.

In this case:
- Cyclists must yield to other users traveling there.
- They do not have priority when rejoining the road (as they are making a maneuver).

Outside urban areas, cyclists can also ride on sidewalks and raised shoulders located on their right (with the same reservations)

What are the specificities of the traffic regulations regarding bicycles?

  • Restricted one-way streets

Cyclists may take a contraflow lane if the appropriate sign allows it. This allows them to avoid main roads, detours, or steep slopes, which also enhances safety. No traffic direction has priority over the other: caution and courtesy are recommended, especially on narrow streets.

  • Cyclist Give Way at Traffic Lights

The cyclist may proceed through a red or orange light if the appropriate sign allows it..
- Sign B22: to turn right.
- Sign B23: to go straight.
- The cyclist is also required to give way to other road users.

  • The dead ends

The addition of pedestrian or bicycle symbols on a "dead end" sign informs pedestrians or cyclists that the path continues as a trail or path that they can take, unlike motor vehicles.

  • The cycle street

The cycle street is indicated by a specific sign, sometimes accompanied by road markings. In these streets, cyclists can occupy the entire width of the road (or the lane if it's a two-way street). The speed limit is 30 km/h, and motor vehicles are prohibited from overtaking cyclists.

  • The pedestrian crossing

There is nothing in the code that prohibits a cyclist from crossing a pedestrian crossing while riding. However, in doing so, the cyclist loses any priority over approaching cars (as well as pedestrians crossing). If the cyclist is walking with his bike, he is considered a pedestrian again and regains priority over cars.

When cycling, should I overtake on the left or on the right?

A distinction must be made depending on whether the vehicles to be overtaken are in motion or not.

  • If the vehicles you want to overtake are in motion, it's considered an overtaking maneuver, and it should always be done on the left.
  • If a line of vehicles is stationary (e.g., at a red light), you can cautiously filter through this line on the right. You can do this as long as the vehicles are stationary. However, once they start moving again, you must stop filtering on the right and merge between two moving vehicles or overtake on the left.

Caution should be exercised when overtaking another cyclist, taking into account the traffic, especially users who may have already begun to overtake at that moment. If the lane is bidirectional, care must be taken not to obstruct those coming towards you.

Can a cyclist ride on the sidewalk?

It is allowed for a cyclist to ride on the sidewalk under certain conditions:
If there is no bike lane. If the bike lane is not usable.
If the road is not located in an urban area.
The cyclist must stay on the right side relative to the direction of travel.
Therefore, the cyclist should not use the left sidewalk.
The cyclist must yield the right of way to other sidewalk users.

Since May 31, 2019, children under 10 years old are still allowed to ride bicycles on the sidewalk.

How are the priority rules applied?

For cyclists, the priority rules are the same as those indicated in the traffic code. Priority to the right applies! Indeed, the cyclist must give way to those coming from the right. They must also yield priority when making a maneuver (such as a U-turn, changing lanes, etc.).
